DIGITALLY ARCHIVED KNOWLEDGE, BUT MORE FUN

You've arrived at a fun portal, indeed. Here are collected a variety of fansites and wikis, once the premier way to access trivia and knowledge about one's favorite fictional worlds.

Today, this is still the case, but the existence of the all-devouring leviathan that is FANDOM.com - cursed be their name, one thousand poxes on their house, etc, etc - has made true wikis a rarity, and fansites are an endangered species now.

Consider this page a directory of some which I found particularly interesting, or had a good history of using in my youth. Hopefully, by viewing these websites, you can get a glimpse into what the internet once was, and still could be.

Metroid Recon

One of the best Metroid fansites I've ever used. The layout is a little more modern than it once was, but is still familiar to me even after all these years. Contains walkthroughs, secrets, wallpapers, music, fanfiction, fanart, and more, all dedicated to the Metroid games. Also links to several other fantastic fansites, some related to Metroid, others not.

Fantasyanime

This website first taught me the secrets of videogame emulation! It has well-written guides to nearly all types of emulation that are constantly updated as the state of the art changes, as well as some great shrines dedicated to various RPGs of old.

RPGClassics Shrines Directory

Here's an oddity. This site hosts a variety of shrines dedicated to an eclectic collection of games, many of which contain detailed maps, walkthroughs, and other important data for completing the games. I have the most memories with the Castlevania: Symphony of the Night shrine, its map is comprehensive and detailed. If you're playing any of the games they have shrines for, and you're looking for a more fun and aesthetically pleasing alternative to GameFAQs, look no further.

Zelda Dungeon

The premier Zelda fansite. Holds detailed walkthroughs of every Zelda game ever released, plus news articles and other info. This has been my go-to for Zelda walkthroughs, their guides are seriously good.

Cave of Dragonflies

This is a great Pokémon fansite that holds a lot of interesting oddities, not the least of which is a fun "find your favorite Pokémon of all time" web-app thingy. Lots of neat articles in here, and fun stuff besides.

Serebii

One of the best and oldest Pokémon fansites on the net. If there's a piece of Pokémon trivia you're looking for, Serebii has you covered. Has an older-styled layout compared to most sites on the internet, which I appreciate a lot. Hosts a full Pokédex containing every data point you can imagine, from movelists to the deep stats.

Bulbapedia

Serebii's old layout not tickling your fancy? Try Bulbabpedia, the other best Pokémon fansite on the net. Laid out like a classy wiki, this site has it all, only more verbose and detailed than Serebii. If you're partial to reading through Wikipedia articles for fun, or otherwise need a detailed source of Pokémon information, this is the place to go.

Fighter's Generation

A great old fansite for all things to do with fighting games. Maintains an up-to-date listing of almost every fighting game character under the sun, complete with data files for each, and often some pretty slick sprite gifs and official art.

Breezewiki

This right here, this is how we beat FANDOM.com. Just a few clicks, and it'll re-direct you from any FANDOM wiki to an equivalent independent wiki, which wil have better, more accurate data, as well as a more usable layout almost 100% of the time.

TWC Classics

A The Weather Channel fansite. Odd concept at first blush, but they maintain extensive archives of various Weather Channel marginalia, including the music, dating back decades. Extremely impressive work on display, here.

WikiBound

A great wiki detailing all the information you could need about the MOTHER series of videogames.

Starmen.net

WikiBound not enough for you? Try this ancient (and still active!) fansite, it has all manner of neat things, including full walkthroughs of every game in the MOTHER series!
